We
are committed to
the Great Commission
and the Great Commandments
by the grace of God.
The Backbone of our Body
This
mission statement forms the backbone of the Crossview body of believers.
Everything that we do in ministry, every
plan we make, every dollar we spend will find its roots in our mission statement.
Jesus defined Himself and His coming by His mission: For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many (Matt 20:28 NIV).
Everything He said and did sprang from this desire. Whether He was healing the sick or feeding the crowds or sitting in a boat while teaching, Jesus never wavered from His mission: to serve and to save.
And that's our mission as well.
The Greatest Commands
Crossview
Community Church is concerned with what's most important in life, and we allow
Jesus to define that for us. Once, when asked, What's the greatest commandment
?
Jesus replied:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments (Matt 22:35-40).
Doctrinal purity, religious conviction, and pious living mean nothing if love doesn't dominate the life of the believer. Crossview is committed to living by the greatest commands to avoid falling into the Pharisee trap:
Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices - mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law - justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former (Matt 23:23 NIV).
The Pharisee Trap is what a person falls into when he thinks that doing makes him pleasing to God. What many Pharisees (then and now) fail to see is that you have be something before your doing means anything.
Works
are nothing more than dirty rags in God's sight if we fail to live with our
spiritual priorities in order: heart first then deeds (see Isa 64:6).
The Great Commission
One of the last, and therefore most important, things Christ said was before He ascended back to heaven and is found in Matthew 28:18-20:
Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matt 28:18-20 NIV).
The
Lord spent much of His earthly ministry
preparing these men to continue what He started: making disciples, baptizing,
and teaching.
This passage has been titled, The Great Commission, though these words are not found in the Text. But Jesus certainly commissions them, and His challenge was and is a great one, both for them and us.
The
Scripture literally reads, Therefore as you are going
(28:18).
While
foreign mission work is vitally important and desperately needed, the family
of God at Crossview understands that mission work exists next door, in the
workplace, and on the golf course, if indeed the people in these places do
not yet know Jesus. A sign over the exit doors of our building reads, Welcome
to the Mission Field.
The Grace of God
God's undeserved favor, His unfathomable mercy, and His relentless pursuit of people drives Crossview to fulfill this mission. Most of us have wasted too many years trying to win God's approval through good works and have ended up as spiritual anorexics. We now derive our motivation from God's boundless grace:
For
the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches
us to say No to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live
self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait
for the blessed hope - the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior,
Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and
to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is
good.
These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you (Titus 2:11-15).
Crossview Community Church is a group of people marked not by perfection or right doctrine but by the grace of God.
We know what Paul meant when he said in 1 Timothy 1:15: Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst. The people at Crossview recognize that God's grace is more powerful than we can imagine or comprehend, but we accept it and live by it anyway.
